How we handle allergens
What’s in it. And what might be.
Every product page carries two allergen lines, and they mean different things. One is what we put in. The other is what could arrive with something we buy — declared by the supplier who makes it, not guessed at by us. This page names all eight of those suppliers’ ingredients and what each one carries.
-
Contains
Every allergen actually in the product — including one that arrives inside something we buy, like the wheat in our puff pastry. Canadian law requires all of them to be declared, and where this line is used it has to be complete. Nothing in it is a maybe.
-
May contain
Allergens nobody added, which could still be present because something we buy was made on equipment that also handles them. Declaring this is voluntary — we do it because the supplier told us. It is never used for anything put in on purpose, and it is no substitute for careful handling.
Both lines follow the Canadian Food Inspection Agency’s allergen labelling requirements. Read their guidance
Where every “may contain” on this site comes from
Eight ingredients, listed widest first. Each one is a product we buy in, and the allergens under it are what its own manufacturer declares about the line it was made on. Nothing on this page is a substitute for the label — it is where the label’s second line comes from.

A product will sometimes list fewer allergens than the source above it. That is deliberate: anything already named in that product’s Contains line is not repeated as a maybe. Saying milk might be in something that definitely has milk in it helps nobody.
If your allergy is a serious one
Everything is made to order, by hand, in one kitchen. We do not run a separate allergen-free line, and we will not tell you a product is safe when what we can honestly tell you is what has been declared to us.
So ask us first. Tell us the allergen and we will go through the product with you — what is in it, what it is made alongside, and whether we would put it in front of you.
